Covid cancels another sport

As the uncertainty caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic continues, more sports and clubs are planning for a winter of very little, or no, activity.

Despite local cricket returning in July, and completing a successful mini-season at the weekend, other local sports including football and rugby remain in limbo.

Over the weekend, the Montgomeryshire & District Airgun League said that their 2020/21 season has been postponed for the rest of the year with a spokesperson conceding: “We will review the situation in the new year, although it currently feels highly unlikely that we will be able to run our wonderful league for the 2020/21 season.”

The Welshpool Canoe Club also decided to put things on hold, telling members: “In view of the current Coronavirus resurgence, we will not be running pool sessions at the moment. We have also decided that it would be best to stop our planned outside activities.”

Local football clubs had been told earlier this month that friendlies could resume later in October with the leagues starting in November, but that is now looking increasingly unlikely with the numbers of positive Covid-19 cases rising by the day.
