We did it!

Welshpool athlete Adele Nicoll has shared the greatest moment of her career with her biggest fans - her mum and dad.

The shot putter threw a mighty 16.89m to retain her Welsh title in Cardiff yesterday, but more importantly it was a big enough throw to qualify for next summer’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

It was a particularly sweet moment for her parents Paul and Justine who have been at her side every step of the way and were able to celebrate the priceless moment with their daughter.

“Mum and Dad, we did it,” said Adele after clinching the title. “We hit the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games (Nomination) Qualification standard.

“I'm struggling to put my feelings into words right now. Today wasn't the result of just a few weeks or months of hard work, it’s taken me 15 years with many setbacks. This sport is so mentally challenging, only the strong survive. What a journey it's been.”

To cap off a fine day, Adele also clinched the Discus title to become double Welsh champion with a personal best throw of 48.71m.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me, believed in me and helped me along the way. I am so grateful for you all. This was a team effort!”

Adele is hoping to secure a double major Games honour next year but also making the Team GB bobsleighs team competing in the Beijing Winter Olympics.

“I’m now off to the North East for a GB Bobsleigh training camp! No rest for the wicked,” she said.
