Welshpool continue to impress

Created on 26/05/2022 @ 12:26

Welshpool lost top spot in MSG Shropshire Division Three after failing to bowl out Quatt who held on with two wickets left in the tank.

Earlier, Paul Chapman (34) and Nick Davies (33) carried Welshpool to 187-9, but the bowlers couldn’t quite deliver the full points, with the visitors holding out for 150-8.

Newtown fell 21 runs short of victory as they failed to catch Bomere Heath’s total in Division One.

Joe Monk (3-45) and Ally Laird (3-25) put Newtown in a decent position as the visitors set a reachable target of 171 all out.

But the hosts slipped behind the required run rate and eventually finished their 45 overs on 150-7 for a losing draw despite the best efforts of Matt Knight (66) and Tom Foulkes (43no).

Bottom side Montgomery’s 140 all out was always going to be tough to defend against Ludlow II in Division Two.

Rob Bennett had bolstered Monty’s total with a gritty 46 from mid-order, but it was never going to be enough as the visitors cruised to an eight-wicket win in the 33rd over.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio are still searching for their first victory in Division Four after a losing draw at Hodnet & Peplow.

The villagers have struggled to bowl teams out this season and were set a daunting 253-2 to chase by their hosts.

But for the second week running, the batsmen held out for the full 40 overs, ending on 140-8 with Steve Griffiths (37) and Finley Hunter (33) showing strong resilience.

Eogan Jones took a brilliant 7-15 from 8.1 overs to help Llanidloes destroy Shrewsbury III and put their promotion bid back on track in the Division Five.

Jones’s performance meant Shrewsbury were whittled out for 32, allowing the Llanidloes openers to steer them home for a 10-wicket win and within two points off the top.

Also in Division Five, Adam Knight hit 58, as his Newtown II side set an impressive 171-8 at Allscott Heath II who batted well to reach victory in the 31st over.

Montgomery II moved into Division Six mid-table with a thrilling win at Chirk II who looked strong at tea with 170-4 on the board.

Skipper Tom Corfield (41) led the reply but it wasn’t until the pen-ultimate over that victory was secured with nine wickets down.

Welshpool II have opened up an advantage at the top of Division Seven after a resounding nine-wicket win at Ellesmere II.

The bowlers played their part, restricting the hosts to 123-9, allowing Mat Sherwood (78no) and Dale Evans (42no) to see Welshpool II home in the 25th over.
