Monty hit form but frustrations for Welshpool, Guilsfield

Newtown’s batting woes were exposed again following an 85-run defeat at Sentinel in the Shropshire Premier League.

The bowlers did their bit, dismissing their hosts for 225 thanks largely to Nathan Smith (3-52) and Sam Baugh (3-53), but the response crumbled to 140 all out with only Rhys Jones (35) and David Laird (30) getting to grips with the Sentinel attack.

In Division Two, Alex Bromley took 5-19 as Montgomery brushed cross-border rivals Alberbury aside after bowling them out for just 97.

Charles Clinton (43) led the reply as Monty cruised to an eight-wicket victory.

Welshpool were denied an outright Division Three victory as Church Aston held out for a share of the spoils.

In-form Sam Cadwallader (53) and Joe Cadwallader (48) led Pool to 188-7 from their reduced 30 overs, but Church Aston held out on 175-8 despite a brilliant 5-38 from spinner Rob Anderson to deny Welshpol an outright victory.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio were put to the sword by some superb Whitchurch II batting, that included a 241-run second-wicket stand as they set 327-4. David Williams (69) and Dave Lewis (35) dug deep in search of a draw, but the resistance eventually ended on 187 all out with two overs left.

Josh Hugo smashed 97 as Llanidloes returned to form in Division Four with an eight-wicket win over Bomere Heath. Hugo was supported by fellow opener Will Denham in a 171-run opening partnership as Llanidloes reached their visitor’s target of 192-7 in the 28th over.

Newtown II’s batsmen were also in fine form, with Finley Bellamore (51no), Ian Hancocks (58), Sam Vooke (52) and Danny Foulkes (40) seeing them through to a first innings total of 319-8 against Iscoyd & Fenn’s Bank.

But the visitors dug in for the duration and denied Newtown the full points by finishing on 219-5. Jonathan Davies (4-44) was the pick of the bowlers.

Welshpool II and Montgomery II both won in Division Six with the former staying among the promotion hunters after a four-wicket win at Calverhall.

Rupert Redway took 3-14 as Pool restricted their hosts to a first innings total of 176 all out, which was no problem with Dale Evans (52no), Mat Sherwood (40) and Suhair Pk (23no) easing them home in the 31st over.

Monty skipper Tom Corfield (78) paved the way for victory at Alberbury II with his side posting 212-7. He then did his bit with the ball, taking 4-18 to complete a fine individual performance.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio II remain second in Division Seven despite a heavy deat to Whiitington who posted 312 to chase.

Alex Parry struck a career high 92 in response, but they ended well short on 167 all out.
