Derby day is another tough challenge for Welshpool

12/09/2025 @ 10:32

Welshpool’s season opener against a rampant Llandudno at Maesydre last week confirmed what life in Division One is going to be like, writes Gary Williams.

However, despite conceding 61 points there were some encouraging signs, scoring 19 points of their own, and unlucky not to get a four-try bonus point as they threw everything at Dudno in the final quarter.

This weekend's game at COBRA is likely to be just as tough but a challenge to be relished for Pool. It has been a number of years now since the clubs have played each other at this level and a bumper crowd is expected.

COBRA, also defeated in their opening game at pre-season title favourites Nant Conwy, were equal to their hosts in the first half before Nant ran in a few tries in the second half to end up 45-12 winners. Nobody will look forward to visiting Nant this season and COBRA will be glad to chalk that one off.

Division Two North gets underway this weekend and there are some mouth-watering derbies lined up. Newtown, boosted by some pre-season signings, will be looking to get their campaign underway with a win at rivals Llanidloes. It will no doubt be ‘blood and thunder’ in the opening stages when Llani will need to get some points on the board as Newtown will battle for bragging rights and those precious winning points right up to the final whistle. I’m looking forward with interest to see how this game goes.

Also, in Division Two, Machynlleth host Dolgellau and I suspect this will go to the wire. Mach, on their day and with their full team, are a match for anybody in this division but they will need to be consistent to challenge for honours while Dolgellau appear to be improving and will be desperate to get back to Division One amongst the big boys. Very difficult to predict the winner in this one.

There is a youth derby taking place tonight (Friday) as COBRA Youth entertain Newtown Youth in the North Wales East Youth league.

On Sunday, the North Wales Women's league gets underway with another derby as Machynlleth Ladies host Llanidloes Ladies. Some great Sunday afternoon entertainment ahead and best of luck to all teams.
