Welshpool still looking for elusive first win

09/01/2026 @ 08:19

Weather permitting, Welshpool will be going into their Division One North encounter at Ruthin in better spirits after coming close to picking up their first win of the season last week, writes Gary Williams.

There were encouraging signs last weekend when Welshpool ran Colwyn Bay very close at Maesydre before going down 22-29.

Pool know that their opposition is a step up from the last game and they will have to be at their best to come away with points against a side who scored over 30 points against COBRA last time out.

High-flying Pwllheli, smarting from a 8-15 home defeat against league leaders Nant Conwy in their last game, visit COBRA and will be determined to get back on the winning trail. It will be a tough test for the Meifod boys who will need to hit the ground running and get points on the board early in the game.

In Division Two, second placed Newtown face what is likely to be one of their toughest challenges of the season when they travel north to Teirw Nant. The hosts, unable to gain promotion themselves because their first team already play in Division One, have been a thorn in many clubs' sides over the past few seasons as they have finished second or third. However, Newtown are grinding out some good wins on the road and may well sneak the points.

Llanidloes can hopefully put last weekend's mauling at Denbigh behind them as they entertain fellow strugglers Bro Ffestiniog. The visitors, tipped to do well this season, have had a disappointing season to date and will see this weekend as a chance to start climbing the table. Llani will have other ideas and may get their first points of the season.

Mid-table Machynlleth have a home game against second from bottom Denbigh and you can't see further than a comfortable home win in this one.

In Division Three North East, unbeaten league leaders, COBRA 2nds have already had their game with lowly Rhosllanerchrugog who can't raise a side.

On Sunday, there are some big games in the WRU National Women's Bowl quarter finals as Llanidloes Ladies host Porthcawl and a big Mid Wales derby as COBRA Ladies travel to Machynlleth Ladies. It would be a fantastic achievement to have two local clubs in the semis. Best of luck ladies.
