Josh misses out to gold medallist

Team Welshpool’s participation at the Commonwealth Games continued to entertain today with Llanymynech’s Joshua Whitehouse showing why he is Great Britain’s top heavyweight judoka.

The 24-year old was in stunning form to breeze into the quarter-finals of Judo’s 100+kg category, beating India’s Yash Ganghas in the round of 16.

He then came up against Cypriot rising star Giannis Antoniou who overcame the Welshman, and then went on to win the gold medal in stunning style later on today.

It meant that Joshua dropped to the repechage section, where he lost a close match to Paul Monta of Tonga, who went on to win bronze.

Despite finishing empty handed, Joshua, who came through the local Go Judo Club, will be pleased to have shown his worth once again on the international stage.

His fellow Welshpool High School teammates, Dan Jones, who won two bronze medals in the swimming pool, and Adele Nicoll, who was fifth in the shot put, completed a trio of elite athletes to have hailed from the school.

The Commonwealth Games finishes tonight in Glasgow with a closing ceremony featuring iconic 1980's band, Simple Minds.
