Llandrinio Bridge has suffered “significant structural damage”

Motorists have been told to expect a long-term closure of Llandrinio Bridge which has suffered “significant structural damage” after it was struck on Monday night.

Powys County Council has issued an update to MyWelshpool readers today, and Dyfed-Powys Police have continued their investigation to what appears to have been a hit and run.

A large part of the safety wall appears to have been struck with huge blocks of masonry falling into the River Severn below. Powys has said these also need to be retrieved.

The bridge was first constructed between 1769 and 1775, and it stands as a Grade 1 Listed Structure and Ancient Monument, making any repair work all the more complicated.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “Following a safety inspection on Tuesday, Llandrinio Bridge has been closed to all traffic due to significant structural damage. The decision to close the bridge was made as a precaution to ensure public safety while a full engineering assessment is carried out.

“Initial investigations suggest that the damage is substantial, and while we suspect the bridge may need to remain closed for an extended period, no final decisions will be made until engineers have completed a thorough assessment. In addition, specialist teams will need to retrieve displaced stonework from the river below, which will require careful planning and coordination.

“We understand that this closure is frustrating for residents, businesses, and commuters, especially given the length of the diversion route now in place.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time. Safety remains our top priority, and we will communicate further updates as soon as more information becomes available and decisions are made.”

The existing bridge over the River Severn at Llandrinio was constructed between 1769 and 1775, and it stands as a Grade 1 Listed Structure and Ancient Monument.
