Students are talk of the town

Welshpool High School had a successful trip to the District Finals of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition which took place in Wrexham.

The teams were supported by their teacher and mentor Ed Jopling and Rotarians Mike Pepper (President Welshpool Rotary Club), Ewen MacLeod, Tony Harvey with his wife Margaret, and Ros Jones.

The Welshpool High School Senior Team, who spoke on ‘Brexit: Britain's Exit’, were Annabelle Casement (Chair), Ciara Owen (Vote of Thanks) and Matthew Evans  (Speaker). They were commended for their team work, confidence, treatment of the subject plus their clear and measured delivery.

Matt had a special mention for speaking without notes and the team was also commended for recognising and thanking their Teacher, Mr Ed Jopling.

Annabelle Casement was awarded 'Best Chairperson' of the competition in the Senior Category.

The Intermediate Team, consisting of Aleesha Lewis (Speaker), Jay Brian (Chair) and Seren Lovatt (Speaker) spoke on ‘How would Pet Ownership Licences improve the standard of care across the UK?’

Again commended for their teamwork, attention to detail and delivery, the team was placed third and named as the District Reserve Team for the National Finals.

Elwyn Griffiths of Llanfair Caereinion provided the transport to and from the venue, the Catrin Finch Centre at Glyndwr University, Wrexham.
