Welshpool Town Council has elected a new Mayor, ending the long tenure of Cllr Steve Kaye who missed out on a fifth year in office.

In a vote held 'behind closed doors’ on Zoom last night with all ‘guests’, including the MyWelshpool, excluded from witnessing the process, Plaid Cymru Councillor, David Senior, was elected.

“I would like to thank Cllr Steve Kaye for the work he has been doing, particularly the huge workload of the past year,” said an emotional Cllr Senior, who represents the Gungrog Ward.

Cllr Kaye, who was first elected in 2016, had been nominated again for the post along with Cllr Estelle Bleivas and Cllr Senior, who was elected after two rounds of voting.

“Thank-you for having me for so long,” said Cllr Kaye.

In another vote excluding the public and media, Cllr Alison Davies won 62% of the vote to be elected Deputy Mayor, beating Cllr Bleivas to the post.
