Newtown made a welcome return to winning ways to ease their early season worries in the Shropshire Premier Cricket League.

Electing to field first, Newtown dismissed their hosts Bridgnorth for 176 with David Laird (3-56) and Marco Malan (3-35) inflicting the most damage.

It was a nervy reply with Ben Price (51) getting Newtown off to a good start. But with wickets tumbling, Tom Anderson (45no) and Griff Davies (32) held their nerve to see Newtown through to tight one-wicket win.

In Division Two, Montgomery’s bowlers were in good form to share the Column wickets between them on their way to a comfortable 94-run win.

Alex Bromley, Aaron Ruff-Cock, Andrew Roscow and Leighton Blagg all bagged two wickets apiece as Column were dismissed for 104 chasing Monty’s first innings 198.

Andrew Barker (59) and Ieuan Griffiths (44) were the top scorers.

There were differing fortunes for Welshpool and Guilsfield & Llandrinio in Division Three.

Skipper Matt McWhinnie (5-23) was in excellent form as Welshpool recorded a narrow two-run win at home to Ludlow II.

Batting first, Welshpool posted 169 with Lance Parkes (66) top scoring and Patrick Wilding adding 28.

But the skipper took hold of the match with two brilliant spells, dismissing the visitors for 167.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio’s winning run ended when a huge target was set by league leaders Wem II at the LHG Oval.

The visitors posted a monster 293-6, well out of reach for the villagers who finished all out on 221. In-form Gary Meredith made 60 and Andy Flann made a welcome return to the runs with 46. Dave Court added 22.

There were Division Four wins for both Newtown II and Llanidloes, who hunted down Newport II’s 228-7 thanks to a wonderful century from Rob Davies (105). Eogan Jones added an unbeaten 50 to secure the five-wicket win.

Newtown held their nerve for a five-run win against Harpers, thanks largely to Sam Cooke smashing a brilliant 131 as the hosts made their way to 227 all out. Danny Foulkes added 36.

With the game hanging in the balance, Newtown II claimed the last wicket in the final over. Lucas Lane took 3-57.

Rupert Redway (5-25) led Welshpool II to victory at Acton Reynald in Division Six. Redway’s efforts restricted the hosts to 163-8 from their 40 overs, allowing Patrick Davies (85no) to spearhead the Pool charge to a five-wicket win.

Montgomery II fell to a six-wicket defeat in Division Six after being bowled out for 108, with only Jac Yewdall (42) making any headway.

The evergreen Rupert Shingler delivered another masterful performance with the bat to ensure Guilsfield & Llandrinio II remain in the early hunt for Division Seven promotion.

But it was the bowlers who struck first, dismissing Ludlow III for 172 with Jinil Thilakan (3-31) and Paul Arkell (3-21) the pick of the attack.

Then, Shingler (82no) teamed up with skipper Gary Griffiths (68) to establish a match-winning opening partnership that powered to victory in just 23.4 overs for the loss of two wickets.

There were Sunday wins for Llanidloes II and Newtown III in Sunday, Division Three. Llani caught Sentinal IV’s 163-8 thanks largely to Will Denham (54no) and Mike Prior (41no). Declan Jones (3-13) and Matt Savage (3-21) also bowled well for Llanidloes.

Newtown III are top after beating Madeley IV by 60 runs. Freddie Roberts (45no), Charlie Evans (30) and Owain Jones (34) saw Newtown through to 188, before the bowlers dismissed the visitors for just 128. Leo Herbert took 3-23.
