Tom Anderson produced a superb spell of bowling to give Newtown back-to-back victories in the Shropshire Premier League against Wem on Saturday.
Anderson took 5-21 from 10 overs to destroy Wem’s response for just 72 runs, with fellow opening bowler David Laird (3-18) also playing his part.
Earlier, Laird made 66 as Newtown posted 201-9 before the bowlers stole the show to help Newtown move up to eighth in the table.
It was a disappointing afternoon for Montgomery who were dismissed for just 82 at Wroxeter & Uppington in Division Two, ending up with a six-wicket defeat.
And there were a pair of defeats for Guilsfield & Llandrinio and Welshpool in Division Three.
Gary Meredith continued his sparkling form for Guilsfield & Llandrinio with a solid all-round performance, but they came up short at Sentinel II.
Meredith carried his bat to remain unbeaten on 79 as they compiled a decent looking 208-6 from 30 overs across the border. Skipper Dave Lewis smashed an entertaining 30 from just 15 balls and Jinil Thilakan made 37.
Meredith then took a couple of wickets alongside Thilakan, but the hosts batted well to reach their target with a couple of overs to spare.
Wem II’s formidable batsmen hunted down Welshpool’s 169-3 from 35 overs. Tom Bowen (46no), Sam Cadwallader (43) and Lance Parkes (33) all batted well for Pool, but Wem showed why they top the table with a strong response, securing an eight-wicket win.
Llanidloes saw their Division Four match at Harpers cancelled due to rain, but Newtown II picked up a big win at Pontesbury thanks largely to a brilliant unbeaten 71 from Danny Foulkes.
After being set 146 all out to chase, with three wickets each for Riley Bellamore and Finley Bellamore, Foulkes held the response together superbly to secure a two-wicket win.
Gethin Serjeant hit a man-of-the-match 63 not out as Montgomery II chalked up a 23-run victory over Coton Hall in Division Six.
He was supported by Rob Yewdall (55) on the way to posting a first innings target of 196, with the bowlers then playing their part to restrict the visitors to 173-7. Daniel Perkins took 3-18.
Welshpool II suffered a 41-run defeat after being bowled out for 71 by Cae Glas, who had earlier been restricted to 112-9. Patrick Davies took 4-18 and Joe Cadwallader took 3-25 for Pool.
Rupert Shingler was once again the man in form for Guilsfield & Llandrinio II who picked up a fourth win on the bounce at home to Chirk II.
Shingler’s 50 runs, and solid knocks from debutant Dave Knight (36) and Matt Edwards (33) saw them through to 194-6 from a rain-reduced 35 overs at the LHG Oval. Alex Parry finished unbeaten on 25.
The bowlers then all pitched in, with a pair of wickets each for Shingler, Dave Harris, Paul Arkell and Gary Griffiths to dismiss Chirk II for 143.
Newtown III kept their winning start to the season at the top of Sunday Division Three going with a 72-run win over Allscott Heath.
Riley Bellamore top scored with 47 as Newtown posted 174 all out, allowing the bowlers to share the wickets around to reduce the visitors to 102 all out in reply.
Llanidloes II fell to a defeat at Madeley IV after posting a first innings score of 149-6. Dave Moody top scored with 45.
But Madeley cruised to victory in the 35th over with five wickets to spare.
