We have a World Champion!

We are proud to announce that the area has a new World Champion!

Alex Sillitoe-Price turned 15 last month and headed into the unknown this week to take on the best 83 archers in the world aged 18 and under.

Alex, who lives near Newtown, has been identified as a rising star on the British archery scene and headed to Winnipeg in Canada as the country’s sole competitor in the men’s U18 recurve event.

The youngster thrived under the spotlight all week and booked himself a place in the finals where he defeated Ukraine’s Serhii Seniura in the last four and then Korea’s Myuangjae Park in the final.

The victory stunned the archery world with Park the overwhelming favourite having already secured two golds at the event.

But he won in straight sets!

Sillitoe-Price capitalised on loose third arrows from the Korean in the first two sets and scored a 30 in the second end to lead 4-0.

“I told my parents last year that one day I’d have a world gold medal, and here I am,” he told the World Archery web site. “Honestly, it just means everything. I worked like crazy, I knew I could do it, and I shot every shot with 100% confidence that this was going to be it.”

“What do I think I can achieve? Olympic gold in LA. Beyond that, I want to compete at five Olympics like Brady (Ellison).”

Alex’s mum, Jo, was quick to praise his coach, Lloyd Brown, by saying: “Your belief in Alex has never faltered, you’re always there when he needs you!

“Congratulations coach - his success is your success and from all of us a huge heartfelt thank you.”
